Mounted sprayers

Looking at taking advantage of TAMS and upgrading sprayer here.

Priced an amazone uf1501 with full gps control vs without gps and difference is small so will probably go the gps route.

What are people’s opinion on going high tech. More things to go wrong would be a concern, but upgrading from a sprayer without rate controller I can see potential for a good bit of time saving being able to vary forward speed within a field.

Like the amazone, but any other makes in particular I should compare and price?

Has anyone experience of the Amatron 3 controller?

How much roughly are we talking for a new mounted sprayer. I know it all depends on the bells and whistles. But just saywith all the Gps section control and modern stuff all the fancy lads have.

i think there great value in second hand sprayers to be had and i personally think trailer the better option
Agreed and if you go trailed and get a berthoud dpa you automatically get rate control no matter what age it is without electronics.

Definitely good value 2nd hand trails out there, but I definitely want to stay with mounted. Grant brings the new unit back close enough to 2nd hand prices that I’m inclined to go that route

Was a Vicon (kvernland) man giving us a talk not long ago. One lad who is dead against computers, kept asking what happens if it gets a bug and crashes out half way down the field.
The answer was that all their systems can be over ridden by switches, you loose the clever bits like auto shut off but can get the job finished. Thought that was a good answer to things tbh!

Someone did point out to the lad that if he stoped downloading so much porn his computer wouldn't crash as often! He was quiet and a bit red faced after that!!

I broke the self tracking drawbar off the 1997 DPE at seven o clock one morning . A new PTO and J&J welded it in the field .It was into its third year. A neighbor had it for a few years after and the electrics gave no problems.

I bought a 1201/ 18m / rate control / amatron 3, it was around £20k in summer 17.
It was a grant job similar to yours, if you're getting the grant go for it.
The sprayer is good kit, much better built than the basic Hardi l had.
Auto rate is 100% worth it for speeding up or slowing down on hills etc.
Amatron 3 is bit fiddley if you're not using the GPS and section control, it'd be much easier to to use a simpler controller to knock on or off sections. You really need to use it with the section control on- which is bloody handy!
Only bother I've had is the GPS occasionally mixing up direction of travel, easy to sort once you twig what's happened!
There's obviously the independent GPS stuff like topcon etc-more flexible with other machines. Amatron I guess is easier to get up and go, but ties you more to Amazone products.
Like most things I wouldn't go back, although simple stuff still has it's attractions!

Get the joystick controller and it is a lot handier to use

Thanks @Ags11
Do you have the joystick for working the Amatron?
Any reason you’d run without the gps section control on at anytime. Can definitely see the benefits of the section control giving less overlaps with more sections and more accurate switching on and off. Can’t really see it saving much on sprays but definitely the job would be done more accurately.

How do you find the sprayer for filling, washing out, etc?

No don't have the joystick. Maybe it's worth getting...
I didn't do section control at the beginning when I was getting myself familiarised with everything - information overload! It is great when you get used to it.
There's also a bit of variation in the settings for sensitivity of the section control for overlapping etc - you don't want to be sowing too close or a section can shut off if you're overlapping!
Amatron 3 probably isn't cutting edge now, I think there's a new bigger touch screen - bigger price too? Topcon definitely have bigger screens etc, but you're working through two different people then. My dealer wanted to stay with Amazone for potentially less hassle for him and me!
I can't fault the sprayer itself, filling washing etc. Get the wheels for it, makes all the difference for hooking on or pushing around the shed.
Most vegetable men around have them, they obviously try them out more than me..

I'd looked at Hardi, Vicon and Lemken, I thought Amazone "looked" the best built - if that means anything?!
To be fair I'd never had many problems with Hardi. But they look like God threw the parts at them from the far side of the room!

@CORK how are you getting on with your gps sprayer? Did you go with 3rd party gps unit or is it part of sprayer package? Will you be able to use same unit for controlling new fertiliser spreader?

Am I right in thinking @gone is running an amazone sprayer?

Sorry no experience of Amazone sprayers other than knowing of a couple being run locally for the last year or 2, not long enough to know how booms, electrics and tanks will stand up, but they are liked so far.
I run a 12 yr old Batman S.P. use to run a Knight trailed and before that Berthoud mounted all the way back to when they were Everard.

Getting on the finest thankfully. GPS control isn’t essential but it’s very nice. Makes the job a pleasure.

Even if one doesn’t go for GPS, I think a rate controller is essential.

We got a Mueller Track Guide 2 with the sprayer.
Usefully, it should also work with the spreader. Mueller actually make the controllers for brands such as Rauch, Horsch etc.
We’re hooking the new spreader up today as it happens.

There’s a grand joystick with the Mueller Track Guide 2, it’s a high quality item that makes controlling the sprayer very user friendly.

Mueller were bought out by Trimble in late 2017.

dj on the case i suppose

I changed the sprayer last year, went from hanging out the back window to electronic section control with back window closed. Didn't bother with GPS control as my acres could not justify it, but 5 sections over 21m and my Topcon display makes it simple to do myself.
I went Berthoud DPE rate control according to speed and am amazed at accuracy so far.
I could not find value in second hands against new with grant, the new one will do me for 20 years at least.
Good few Amazones selling here going by the dealers yard.

@mixedbag we just got a new trailed Amazone with gps section control and auto boom height control . Have the amatron 3 box and the joystick , the tractor is isobus ready able to run the sprayer through the tractor screen and the gps on the amatron screen . Even if running the two through the amatron screen I wouldn’t see any problems. Haven’t done anything yet but set it up in a field the day we got it and seems easy to get in on.
