What are you up to in the workshop?

When buying seals, don’t buy a kit for the ram. All you need is the main seal and the scraper for the outside. A seal kit could be €40 whereas just what you need is about €10, all the other bits are plastic packing and spacers which should be fine. Inner glands should be fine if the rams aren’t creeping during use. A good hydraulics shop will just give you what you need anyway.
Abbey Seals had exactly what I needed this morning, I replaced the two seals & scraper at the top of the rams & also the inner gland and packers in one of the rams. About €40 plus vat for the lot.

Then bared the paint work down with grinder wire brush and primed them for the final green coat.
Not too many would bother going to the trouble I suppose.

Burnside rams were a pleasure to work on compared to some others I’ve seen in the past.

Byrne’s of Burnside engineering are neighbors of ours and would have walked across our farm to primary school . They now employ over a 1000 people and have a factory in Pennsylvania with a lot of spin off subcontracting factory’s doing specialist work for them . Paddy has written a book and Tommy is writing one. Their children and grandchildren are now running the various businesses and are fluent in many languages. Paddy learned Japanese in his fifties and now must be in his eighties and has retired many times . They have managed to compete with companies in low wage economies by being very efficient and having high standards. They expanded during the recession and are still building factories.

Kellys precision engineering is related to Burnside also, had a tour of the factory a few years ago and was mightily impressed.

They’re actually quite handy for non accessible areas but the problem is if they work loose, the hole they’re in gets bigger. Another squeeze of the gun might tighten them. But otherwise to replace them the old one needs to be drilled out. Trying to drill a rivnut out while it’s spinning in its housing is another challenge, however...

The nutserts going live in the holes is a right pain iv been trying out some hex nutserts this last while they are a mighty job it must be said same gun is used to fit them aswell

Lad`s what`s the best way of repairing a rusty steel bumper . 90% of it is perfect . Has a few holes in it but steel around is sound . Cut out and weld in new steel or is there a filler i could use .

What's it on? How thick is the steel? How good a job do you want to do.

Cornflakes box and isopon or welding and grinding, really just depends how good you want it.

Truck bumper 2mm / 2.5mm thick . Doesnt need to be perfect but don`t want to do a half ass job on it .

have a look on the Würth website, they have a range of them on there. Think they have them in small pack quantities if you didn’t get sorted this morning!
