Massey Ferguson

The 4365 we had was a good enough tractor if it had been limited to the work a 390T did problem was the all the machinery had stepped up a size by then .A 1000l 12m sprayer was workable , A 24 m 1200l is just over 2.5 tons loaded add 450kgs front weights and with a 6613 your at fully 7.5 tons gross .

Massey Fergson 5470 Dyna 4

Just seen this thread might aswell throw this up, thinking of changing tractor here have a 5455 but wanting more power for the likes of the slurry spreader and just the 55 isnt enough anymore , just wondering what are lads opinion on the 5470s? Or would I be as far on waiting out for a 6470? Just came across this 5470 on donedeal and thought it looked v clean and relatively resonably priced considering..

Would you not go for a 6 pot?

5470 are a pocket rocket, but a bit limited on gears, if you find the 55 has enough gears the 70 will be a massive step forward power wise, but if you are short of gears with the 55 the 5470 will be of no help to you. The 6470 will offer you more comfort and way more gear selection with a heavier duty tractor in all than the 5470, but will use slightly more diesel and lose slightly more power through the gearbox. Both will be a step forward, but the 5470 will only be moving up in hp nothing really else.

Back in 2010 I asked dealer to give me a price on a 5480,he kept telling me I didn’t want a 5480 and he’d send me a 6480 to try,I’m still waiting!

Is a 5470 4 cylinder and a 5465 6 cylinder or am I raving
.

Yea 5470 is a 4 pot sisu and the 5465 is a 6 pot perkins . All 5470s are dyna 4 where as 5465 could be got with speedshift and moved on to dyna 4 when it came along . 5465 tier 2 and 3 were fairly dead compared 5470 but could get the ecu mapped turned them inside out dealer i used to work at did a few and tranformed them only problem was they drank diesel when doin any road work

Oh the last of the 5465 are sisu when mf had used all the perkins and switched to sisu and few of 5460s were sisu too assume they had no perkins left when had come near end 54/64s

Correct.
Pat Hs is a 5470. Some power. It pulls 2700 gallons up that hill beside my field in top gear.
I think its gone over 8000 hours now . 131.
An injector went in it during the winter , but otherwise fairly trouble-free.

Ya it does some going alright. Has he another Massey too ?

I would rate the massey ferguson 4270 one of the most reliable tractors ever made, have had 3 of them here, they are bullet proof work horses, very basic tractor but a true stallion

can vouch for that. we know of one over the road from us. that tractor has been through hell and back. god knows how many hours are there on it. friend of my dads that works for the man that owns it doesnt know how its still going. gearbox went in it at one stage, been through a couple of crashes. and when he thinks the tractor is dead, for some odd reason it springs back to life. it just wont die. its bulletproof for all the wrong reasons

There based on a 399 aren't they . 399 would be bulletproof too

The high medium and low springs didn’t give trouble as much in the 4270 as the 399’s. The cab of the 4270 was a good bit better too and the diesel tank position of the 399 was ridiculous. Had a 399 baling before the 4270, there was no where to even leave a bottle of water in a 399

The one I had was 2wd and the 3 sticks. Ya the cab was basic compared to the 4270

Who ever came up with the h m l on one stick should have been shot, woeful gearbox! Trying to set off with a heavy load you needed to be in medium then you’d lose momentum trying to get into high.

Taken me 15 years to buy a Massey again,I loved the 12sp 3 stick it was a great gearbox,12x12 and 18sp were shite.

We had 2 399’s here a 2 wd and a 4wd. The 2 wd used to do all the mowing with a 8 foot mounted krone conditioner mower, one day the cross shaft just snapped on it and down she went on the road, Over 20 years later I now run a 6480 with a mounted krone and it’s twisting the cross shaft still (not much changed) the 4 wd 399 did all the baling with a round pack. 4270 could just do anything, first tractor my father bought new was a 4270 in 98, traded it in 2014 with 16 000 hours it was just an animal.
