As said if the bull is tested you are covered, you couldnt do any more and shit happens. Swapping the bull is the decent thing to do and would be offered by many good breeders but not all by any means. Nothing more to be done here I feel, the less you say to the guy the better imo. You've made your offer and what he decides to do with it is his business.Hi Guys,
Im new to this site and would like to ask for a bit of advise. I am a very small breeder that sells a couple bulls per year.In may i sold a bull to a gentleman to run with a small number of cows. I got the bull fertility tested the month before I sold him and sold him with a valid cert. However last week i received a call from the farmerr that bought the bull to say all his cows were empty and the bull is infertile. I was horrified and genuinely felt bad.
I offered him a gesture of good will to exchange the bull for another bull i have here with similar breeding except the new bull would be 5 star.
He said he would need to think about it, 2 days later he rings to say that he now has to kill his herd of HOMEBRED cows and is demanding €5000 off me.
I have spoken to several breeders , vets and also my solicitor and all believe i could have done nothing more as a breeder when selling the animal and have the right to tell the gentleman tough luck! however, if this is a genuine case i have no problem swapping the bull. Also i find it very hard to believe how a farmer would not cop the bull infertile before 6 months. Each cow would be cycling approx 8 times each in that period. surely this is a red flag?
Any input greatly appreciated.
Thanks again
Thanks guys for the replies. I really feel bad over this if it’s true! But reading your replies eases it a small bit. Thanks again.
How many cows had he served? Surley twenty or more? Would it be an idea to ask to scan the cows yourself with whoever does your scanning? That could catch him out if his making stuff up.Hi Guys,

He says that the bull has no cows in calf. I don’t know is that true or not.How many cows had he served? Surley twenty or more? Would it be an idea to ask to scan the cows yourself with whoever does your scanning? That could catch him out if his making stuff up.
I wouldn't get tied nto it. You made your offer, more than enough considering the time lapsed. Don't bother to contact him but keep track of any correspondence. My guess is he has seen that you are feeling bad about and thinks he will get the payout. Twud take a fair decent bunch of weanlings to give you 5k into your pocket. He says that the bull has no cows in calf. I don’t know is that true or not.

What age was the bull and how many cows was he with do you know?
To be finished with this person, give him a deadline to accept your offer to swap the bull but also on condition that you get to test your old bull again (at your expense unfortunately), this will bring closure to it. In one text to him (for the record) detail all of the above including original selling date and tag number of the bull. Don’t make a monetary offer at all as a 5k demand from him is suspicious.I sold him at 15 months he was to run him with 12 cows.
I would say that's fair if it wasn't 6 months since the sale of the bull. You can't be held accountable indefinitely on the sale of an animal. To be finished with this person, give him a deadline to accept your offer to swap the bull but also on condition that you get to test your old bull again (at your expense unfortunately), this will bring closure to it.
