Cheap Bicycle

Any cyclists on here?

Need a cheap bike to get me to and from work.

Moving office very soon and that is going to lengthen my commute. I'd be well enough served with bicycle lanes.

Not moving to a very nice location - (think drugs etc) so a new fancy one is out. Secondhands seem to be very rough in my experience. Something new and cheap would be fine.

Anyone any thoughts? I want to get it all done fairly quickly.

A Halfords is not far away.

Halfords do have a good selection.

I paid not much over €400 for mine. You'd get them bit cheaper too. What's your budget? and is it a racer of mountin bike you'd rather?

Glanbia were selling mountain bikes for €120 in the spring, shimano gear set. But Glanbia is a swear word on here.

A mountain bike preferably Mike, and as cheap as possible so it is not a crying shame if it is nicked. Won't be far from O'Connell Street. :sweatdrop:

Would you be eligible for the bike to work scheme Nash? Halfords might be your best bet tbh.

I have asked and they are somehow linked in with an expensive bike retailer.

Done deal Nash the ould lad here is after getting a cheap one off it

I have seen nothing only rubbish second hand John!

I got mine for free, a friend of the family was getting rid and I was offered it.

The guards have a sale of stolen bikes that are never claimed every so often.

Also worth checking if your company are in the bike to work scheme, good value to be had in that.

I think a cheap bike for a commute is the way forward, bike theft is common enough so be prepared. A good lock will slow them down a little.

If you're looking at halfords, it's worth finding someone with a discount card ;)

Lads here were into the Gardai bikes and said they are gone ridiculously dear. :sweatdrop:

Would I know someone with one

Any thoughts on this - it caught me eye.

Ah yes, Wise move so going cheap.
Old fella here got a grand bike through the back to work thing, needless to say he can hardly get up on it :D Brother uses it away the odd time.

A +1 for the bike to work scheme.

If that's the case then that's out of the window.

I suppose you might know someone with one alright

Doesn't look bad, the front suspension is fine but I wouldn't opt for rear suspension unless it's only a saddle as it takes a lot more effort to get around with the rear suspension moving.

:D

Yep, that's what someone else said as well.

You don't necessarily have to go with the retailer that your business is linked to.
Hey, next thing you'll be out with laoisfarmer and myself on the mountain trails.

I wouldnt bother with cheap front suspension.

I dunno if the expensive stuff is good. I've a 500 euro giant I dont use nearly often enough but on the road I'd leave the suspension locked out.

You do not want cheap suspension on your bike, trust me. You won't need suspension for road usage. What you'd pay for a decent entry level front suspension is probably what Nash is planning on spending on a bike. You won't get a bike worth its salt with full suspension for less than a grand.

He'll stick to the walking at that price :D

Having had both full suspension and rigid mountain bikes in around dublin and borrowed lads cheap road bikes Id say stick the the rigid and preferably small tires, as in not big wide ones. The road bikes always seemed to be getting punctures, think I'd 1 in the full suspension but that was it thankfully!

Buy yourself a decent bike. You are worth it, a bit of comfort is nice at the beginning and end of the day. Think of the money you have saved by not buying. Trailer ?:001_smile::001_smile:

I am saving for that so that is why I need a cheap one :D

Looked at a hybrid last night - as gone says seems to be decent.

A lot of the cheap bikes are rubbish though, I see my nephews with new bikes, then you see them 6 months later and the rust is coming out through the wheels and the brakes and gears are just about working.

I bought a GT a few years ago, thread on here about it.

i was similar to you, but my reason for limiting the budget was that it was occasional use.

anyway, i bought a GT aggressor 2.0, similar to the one in the link, i went s/h and bought it from a charity that specialised in servicing bikes and selling them, bought it for £150, happy enough with it, it came on continental hybrid on/off road tyres factor this in, if you buy something on very coarse tyres it'll make pedalling so much effort, i like the disc brakes, more reliable and longer lasting. all in all i'm glad i went S/H and a ok brand than cheap with a budget brand

nashmach make sure what you are buying has mudguards fitted, first wet day and it will plaster you otherwise.
