Food

I’m actually going to donegal for a night in a weeks time. Have booked into Letterkenny. Haven’t been to Donegal before.

Any good food places in Letterkenny?

They are laying water mains and sewers is two or three separate places in Letterkenny at the minute and the traffic is a nightmare in the morning and the evening, if you have any appointments add an hour to an hour and a half so you be there on time, there is times it's ok and some times it's not

we,re going to a wedding on the sligo roscommon border staying near boyle, any nice places to get a bit of fodder in that area on friday night ?

Drumanilra farm kitchen is good, they run their own organic farm, but it's day time only.

Carrick On Shannon isn't too far away, The Oarsman is usually good but I haven't been there for a while.

We were in Castle Durrow on Saturday at 6 pm . Herself had the chicken curry .
Bland lukewarm slop , I would describe it as . She ate most of it . I saw another woman with the same dish had tossed and turned hers and left half of it . I had a sort of sea food stew , which wasn't bad , possibly lacking some seasoning , and was at least hot enough.
I hear there is a different manager there lately . If that meal was anything to go by , I can't see it staying getting rave reviews as wedding venue to die for .
We were on the way somewhere , and in a bit of a hurry . We were served promptly.
Your main course looks divine @Bog Man .
Used to go there one Sunday a month but it’s not as good as it used to be , Mcevoys in Abbeyliex is a lot better now

Herself's brother has just booked it for their wedding next April too so hope they pull up their socks.

We were at a wedding there about 2 years ago and it was excellent. The marriage only lasted 3 months though so the venue was the best part of that whole venture
And herselfs brother has it booked to get married next March. I've eaten there myself a few times and found the food to be good. The last time it could have been a bit hotter but it was still enjoyable.

I use TripAdvisor a lot of I’m in an area that I don’t know.

It hasn’t let me down yet.

If a place strikes me as particularly good or bad I’ll leave a review on the site too. A place won’t always realise how good or bad it is unless it’s told so.

Have had reason to be in mullingar a bit lately with work and by chance walked into a place called con's on the main street down near the canal. Jaysus it's a serious feed, different lunch menu every time I've been there and very prompt service. Let's just say that job is getting a few more site visits than would usually be the case

Not much choice in Boyle itself but a lot of choice in a few mile radius if your not pushed on having a drink with the meal or don’t mind €20 on a taxi

Highway robbery, at least with Dick Turpin you knew you were being robbed.

Many's a fine meal was had for a third of that in excellent Routiers with copious amounts of vin rouge to wash it down :drunk:

I would expect that a man of @humungus ‘s social standing would have a driver.
Somewhere exclusive with space for a large car would be required.

Absolute robbery, needless to say we wandered a bit further away and found something more reasonable. But someone was and will be paying that, I think a steak for an adult was around €60.
At least in this country you wouldn't be hungry after spending €10 or €15 on a plate of grub in the right place.

It’s probably the best in town for lunch, red earth is very popular too, down in the industrial estate.
For an evening meal Oscars is very good, I’ve heard a man with over 50 years experience in the meat business say it’s up there with the best steak he’s had in Ireland.
The grevill arms is very good too, old style cooking, big portions, you’d be bursted after a feed in there.
Most pubs have moved over to doing lunches in town in recent years, I moved out a few years back, I wouldn’t be up to date with all the changes,

The Church Restaurant is well worth a visit too. Excellent quality! The Greville, The Annebrook and Danny Byrnes are hard to beat also!

Anyone with any recommendations for the youghal area. Down there next week. Will have the baby with us so nothing too fancy, a nice seafood place would be ideal

Ahearnes would Have a good name . The Old Imperial Hotel was good , but under different management now afaik , so not sure now .
The Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel seemed fine but only in it once.

A come on a young executive like Jay . The Cliff House in Ardmore. Keep the standards up lads .

White Horses in Ardmore a lot nicer than Cliff House seriously nice grub

You have it nailed there. This wins hands down in the Youghal area. Better to book. A lot of the residents in the Cliff House go to the White Horses for food.

The Tatch in Killeagh does a grand lunch. Haven’t tried their evening menu.

I’m out of touch with Youghal. I wouldn’t go to Ahernes, notions of themselves in the past. My grandfather disliked it as they wouldn’t allow children (that may have changed).

Let me know if you’re traveling Midleton direction, it has lots of good places. I’d highly recommend the Farm Gate in Midleton.

There’s a little Italian beside the clock tower in Youghal. It was nice when I was there once.

The tour of the Clock Tower is well worth doing. Boat tours of the river blackwater depart from Youghal, they may have started for the summer. Very nice on a good day.

Excellent, thanks very much for that info @CORK . The little man is very small still so well be looking for fairly sedate activities. Might get over to Middleton for a Day, we stayed in garryvoe a few years ago and saw a bit of the town then

Never ate in the Cliff but the White Horse was good although it can be hard to get into without a reservation. Very friendly in there too and helpful to the disabled , as is Aherns in Youghal. Only thing about Aherns is the menu seems to be a bit static.

The boardwalk in Youghal is nice and a good option for a pram.
Forecast looks a bit better for the weekend so hopefully you’ll enjoy the trip.
Cobh is lovely for a spin. Brambley Lodge does nice food, it’s near Fota.
Meadows & Byrne does a nice bite too, it’s just outside Carrigtwohill.
Ballycotton and Roche’s point also worth a look.

The Kilkenny shop in Shanagarry does nice food.

You won’t go hungry in East Cork!!!

That's great. Thanks very much for those recommendations. Great to have a few ideas before we head off. A small bit of good weather would be lovely though to be honest after a few tough months we'd be quite happy with our books and a drink looking out at the rain if it came to that.

I'm not hugely into holidays but every now and then a break away is lovely
