Ford 6600

Evening all, just said I would post up few pics of my Ford 6600 which has just undergone a full restoration and is nearing completion.
We were looking for something a bit bigger than the 4000 and with a little more comfort so after travelling the country looking at overpriced heaps of shite this 6600 appeared on donedeal. I was kind of looking for a 7600, bigger than we need but I drove several of them years ago when I worked for local contractor and always had a liking for them.
I think she is a very complete and original, she is 1981 power plus, has original engine which was rebuilt in recent years and 2 owners from new before me, the last owner since 1992.

I bought her back in October and worked her for a few weeks to make sure all was in order and then got stuck in. I knew the cab was quite rotten when I bought her, otherwise I probably would have left her as is for a few years anyway. I have about 200 pics of the progress so far.

200????

Bring it on!
200 or more, the cab was quite rotten, I'll have ye bored to death by the end of it!
I have restored a good few tractors in the past and a few mk2 escorts so I'm well used to knowing how to spot rot, I had given the tractor a good going over when I bought it and could see the rust swelling under the rubbers etc but I have to say I was surprised at how bad it was when I got her properly stripped.

Just a touch of rust around the window frame there alright

And you'd think looking at it, that it wasn't in bad shape at all!

It was well minded anyway, even down to the rear mudguard extensions with the additional reflectors.

I bet the brakes are bad with the age of it. When the rubber boot keeps leaking it is time to replace them.

Yea it's usually a good indicator of how it was treated when those bits are still intact.

Believe it or not the brakes are quite good, I had to remove trumpet housing to replace leaking hub seal so we inspected brakes at same time.

Not sure why some of them went up twice. I have plenty more of the welding but if I'm boring ye with pics of that let me know!

i'm not at all bored with welding, that is what i am mainly interested with to see how tricky repairs are done.

Some years ago an inlaw turned his 6610 and enquired from the ford motor company the price of a new q cab frame, just the frame not doors nor windows. it was 17 thousand in irish punts at the time iirc.

A new tractor wouldnt have been much dearer at the time I'd say!

You must have cried when you discovered how rotten a very straight looking tractor actually was underneath the paint . I know I would have turned it into an AP canned 66.
There's plenty of Q cabbed Ford's about carrying a couple of kgs of Isopon about.
What's under the bonnet of the yellow MK2?
There must be something in the air up that part of the world , that makes lads want to rescue old tractors and put them back as good as new.

About twice that I should think. Because of the prices ford were and are charging on new parts tanner bros in cork were doing a great trade in breaking brand new tractors. If it weren't for the spurious parts qtp and others were selling I doubt there would have been as many ford tractors in the country kept running at least.

Well as I said I knew it was fairly rotten but I was quite shocked when I removed the windows to see how bad things were. Still its worth doing as I intend keeping it for the long term and when it's done it will be a pleasure to use.

The mk2 has Tom Case built vauxhall xe, 240 bhp dry sumped and quaife alloy cased dog box. She is fairly sharp on the road!
