hi- i have a 99 landini 9880 4wd - when I put on the pto it grinds and when I knock it off it shakes the tractor and I'm using hand clutch - any ideas why?

Does it grind if you move gently forward / rock it in?
The one here you have to do that. It doesn't shake the tractor though turning it off but would wait till the PTO stops before disengaging the lever and letting off the hand clutch.
When you say the tractor shudders, is it only when the hand clutched is pulled up? Sounds like your hand clutch is out of adjustment.
You need to have it tight enough so that it stops the drive when engaging, but not so tight that its rubbing all the time.
A small bit of grinding when putting in the pto is no harm, just that it's not major grinding. My other recommendation is not the pull the clutch up far enough it clicks, pull it up as far as it will go and hold it when engaging.
