max nitrogen for hay-haylage

just a question re max nitrogen limit for hay-haylage , they usually advice 50 units or so but some like to bulk the crop up and have pushed it up to 70. any thoughts ?:thumbup1:

doesnt matter how much you put on it,if you dont want to dry it
more nitrogen=more sap=longer to dry
unless you leave the grass to head and lose quality

I'd agree with that. Also I wouldn't apply just straight nitrogen preferring a NPK mix such as Richland or Sweetgrass. It will lead to much better quality grass.
 
if your low on P in the soil then my take on it was always the N wouldnt be used up fully.
as nash says, the other two (P,K) are important too.

put it this way, if the plant hasnt got the energy (which would come from the P mostly) to use up the N then you will just draw it back into the pit/bale when you make silage out of it.

altho, if you use slurry on the same ground then it would be a big help.
but for round here, straight N is too sharp on ground on its own.
3 bags of 18-6-12 or 27,2.5,5 will grow all the grass you will need imo.
if its for hay i wouldnt put the fert on heavy or you will need real good weather to dry it, id be inclined to put on a bag less and give it another week or two growing if its for hay.
