Spring Barley - General Thread

I know it was a topic discussed recently but I was planning doing T1 this week on barley sown around 12-14th May, would you bother with how fast they are growing ? Maybe just a T2 when flag is out considering it will probably be out in the next week or 2
Not even planted 20 days?really Doubt they would be ready for or need a fungicide

Looking very nice.

Walked through the plots here, things are moving fast now. A lot of flag leaves out compared to Friday. I fear for some of the plots. At least they’ve had over a month longer in the ground compared to 2018.

Is this really starting to look like 1984?

You'er not thinking of 1995 are you?

I can remember 1995, a lot of money was made that year.

I was 7 years old in 84 so was probably more occupied with Lego than crop yields lol

Someone might correct me about 84.

There were great yields in '84, but I think the drought started a lot later.
Not being a cereal grower the first thing 1984 brings to mind is George Orwells book 1984, is there a hint of Trumpism in it...
What is the main theme of 1984?
Totalitarianism is one of the major themes of the novel, 1984. It presents the type of government where even the head of the government is unknown to the public. This theme serves as a warning to the people because such regime unleashes propaganda to make people believe in the lies presented by the government.

I put up the monthly stats for 1984 in the weather tread . It is very like 1984 but 85 and 86 were horrendous years. In 84 We harvested 20 tonne of beet in September in a reclaimed bog but the tare was over 25% .

I'd say he is thinking of 1994, the year the ploughing was in Enniscorthy :scratchhead:
95 was dry from sowing to harvest, we were finished everything by Aug 8, fields cleared etc. Portlaoise bypass was mid construction then, made a few quid spraying water to keep dust down. In 1984 my Dad cut over 4t/ac of winter wheat.

I have 95 now. Reseeding in dust on August 15th after SB and clearing straw.

Dad always told me 84 was his best yields.
Spring crops had no rain for 6 weeks after sowing.
I remember 95, l can remember standing at the gate watching the combine start off, l remember thinking l wouldn't stick the savage heat!
Crops were cut and baled up by the middle of August. Good prices for grain and straw too.

I was training as a farm manager in 94 working on a farm in Carlow, we came back from the ploughing match to finish cutting winter wheat, and started sowing soon after that again. It was a late spring and late harvest from recollection.

You are right. Harvest was late, last field was cut here by a memorable character the last day of the Ploughing Match that year.
