Spring oats

Why is it struggling do you think?

Could do with a drink I think or else I've high expectations.

Been fairly harsh the last few days here with great drying.

The barley on the other side is slow enough about kicking off too.

First photo is not as bare looking in reality as the photo makes it appear but would be at a slightly lower rate.

First time I'm growing SO so maybe I'm a little out of touch on it.

Six days on and it's doing pretty well. Got 40 units of N on Friday evening but last nights rain didn't do much. Grass is coming as well of course :rolleyes2:

Reasonably happy with it

  • Isabel oats, noticed this about two weeks ago and gave it 2l of Mancozin soon after. At first I thought it was zinc deficiency, it has got a lot worse since I sprayed it and a few new patches have started to show. I gave it 5 kg of Compitop today. That stripe down the field corresponds with a ditch that was taken out twenty odd years ago. Any idea what it is?2EE941D5-EADF-406C-8E8A-BDC653E3717C.jpeg 71E416DA-843B-437C-8D2D-5C8E57F13C4E.jpeg

I’d say pH. It looks that severe. Even the grass weeds don’t look happy.

Would the PH want to be extremely low to affect oats? There was winter barley there the last two years and no problem. Mind you I can’t remember when it was last limed.
It looks like it could be pH, it would trigger off the other deficiencies like Phosphorus.
Would you have ploughed any deeper? Perhaps the wet winter pushed the pH over the edge.
I often think the lime just gets washed out of some soils.

It would be interesting to take a soil sample from the poor area and an area where the crop is good and compare the results.

I will take a few soil samples and let ye what shows up.

When would I want to consider topping up the oats to 90 units/acre or thereabouts?

It got weeds and manganese etc on Friday but left out the CCC given the forecast.

Was thinking of going with the CCC later this week when it warms up and calms down and with the N if more rain makes an appearance. Have about 15 more units to go on it.

Before the next rain. I’m at 75, I’ll throw 25 on it maybe next weekend. No ccc on either but weeds done 2 weeks.

Husky crying out for a drink. The grower has to wait until Saturday for the same

All the N went on as soon as I could see the tramlines as that tends to be a dry area when rain is scarce and I've been caught a few times with fert laying on top into June.
