More barley
10+ years ago we had a 20 acre field of spring barley and we wanted to take cattle (I think) through the middle of it to another field. Cut a run through the middle of it with a front mower. Might have done another run on the way back. About 200m length. Crop was maybe slightly earlier than the one in the pics. Baled shortly after. No additive used.

I thought it would preserve the finest. Awful disappointed when I opened the bales. Sour smelling and the straw was sloppy. Too wet is my guess but if it had been left to dry the grain might have dried out too much, who knows. The cows seemed to like it though.

It’s going into the baler now, the grains were big enough, just starting to get cheesy, it’s hard to know when baling it, it’s not my own once again

In a bulky crop like Barley would it not be much cheaper to use a SPH with a mill and do a proper job on the grain and a lot less rat issues? You must have 12 bales an acre at least in that stuff.
Majority of lads down here aren’t set up for pits as I said it’s not my own it’s all on hire, but the best crops of barley Iv seen have only done 8/9 bales an acre, it packs extremely well, I do about 300-500 bales on hire of it a year for the same few men and they swear by it

A farmer I work for has a field of wholecrop barley and grass, but flax was in it the year before for that bird cover. The flax is growing like mad now and is flowered out, does anyone know can it be made into silage or is it safe ?

What % linseed are you talking about. Unless it's like 20% of total biomass I would have no issue wholecroping

18 more acres being knocked this morning, will be bales this evening

Is that mown with a conditioner mower? How do the bales fare out with pests?

15 odd years ago , I reseeded a field each year. Plough , till , sow grass seed and scatter 5 or 6 stone go the acre of seed barley . And finally roll it in . I used claim arable aid on it . Mow it around now , and bale and wrap it .

The descendants of some of the rats are probably still here .:eek3:
You would want to buy rat bait by the pallet.

Sometimes it is but this time one of my drivers is mowing it with his own tractor and mower to try a new tractor. I’d imagen rats are fairly bad I never actually done it on my own farm
