At the mart...

I suppose it is , though I wouldn't have ever been it , nor know anyone fro. Here Abouts who goes there.
Would Tullow be the only Carlow mart in that case ?
The only full time mart actually in the county, Borris mart still sells some sheep and Carlow mart is in Co. Laois

seen a few links on a few different sites for a big Fleckveigh sale today , not sure where it was held but Ballyjamesduff mart were involved , was on Marteye but couldnt view it without registering to bid

Heard a thing or 2 today about them auctions.wouldnt be just enamoured by the setup going by a sale that took place last spring....
Can't beat the proper sales ring , animal paid for before it leaves the mart and seller gets his money in a few days.

Thought this chart showing cow numbers was interesting. We have 3 marts in the county and you could say that we are served by 2 other marts in dowra (100 meters across the Shannon) and elphin (8 miles across the Shannon). We also have a specialised pedigree sales ring just across the Shannon in Carrick on Shannon. 1900 cows in total we have in the county. Take out 10% replacements and 10% of sucklers that don't have calves each year and you're down to 1600 at least. 4 good sales in the local mart would sell all of the cattle in the county. Easy to see that we do get a lot of sellers from other counties but it really tells us that all 3 marts in the county may not be viable into the future.

I wouldn't pass much on those sort of figures as there not taking in the full picture imo. There's a world of cattle being drawn in from near and far to all those marts and that's what's keeping them going. If all the Leitrim marts depended on Leitrim born stock then it would hardly justify 1 mart never mind 4. A lot of the county's cattle and sheep spend more time in Roscommon, Longford, Meath and Westmeath than in Leitrim.

There's a few lorry loads a week coming from Ballina, Crossmolina and Belmullet to some of the marts mentioned. There's men drawing stock from as far as Mullingar in the opposite direction and a lot of them are farmers cattle as opposed to dealt stock. A prominent Cavan mart has more Donegal and Sligo stock than natives. A neighbour of my own sent me to Roscommon with hoggets despite the fact I go to Manorhamilton weekly. Another man down the road draws bullocks 35 miles to Roscommon despite having Elphin, Ballymote and Dowra closer to home. Personal preference is a strange thing in the mart business.

Yer mixing up numbers there.the figures that was published earlier in the thread were for dairy cows only not suckler cows.its hard to see all them marts surviving but we've said that years ago.different marts have " their own type of stock and customers " so people often pass there local mart to go to the next.
There's things about most marts that will not keep everyone happy

I was referring to the overall numbers of cattle in the county which still wouldn't justify all the marts. The suckler herd is in steady decline and there isn't huge opportunity for dairying in most areas of the county. For the likes of Drumshanbo and Mohill the proximity of the N4 is a huge boast for both buyers and sellers up the country. As you said people differ and what works for one might not be the preference for someone else.

I was doing a scan of online marts, this evening, tuned into Gortatlea .
I see pens of Fresians bulls Feb/Mar 240 kg €280
Seems funny to be listening to a distinctly northern auctioneer selling in a mart so far south.

There is value left in them.
I hear weanlings are a bad trade, partly due to no shipping of the lighter ones

There’s friesians and there’s friesians. Huge variation in them now.

A strong diet of long rushes combined with specially adapted calendars and you too can have your bull weanlings to 430kg at 5 months. In fact the animal before this was recorded as being born on June 1st 2021 and weighed 450kg.

Cattle showing is a great way of keeping your children interested in farming but it gets a bit frustrating when you face a long line of animals that did 3kg a day since birth. We have been showing animals since I was a small child and the emphasis was never on winning.

You would want to be up very early to catch those lads out

Thankfully it's all but gone from the pedigree LM game. Weighing at birth and now the adaption of genomics has drawn a line under most of the shenanigans
