anyone know what this is?

War of Independence era would be my bet.

Bagenal is right to caution us, I know of grenades that were found from that period, they were very much live when blown up in the quarry!

Long before that era I would think, muzzle loading fell out of fashion in the mid to late 1800's as soldiers weapons were replaced with cartridge loaders.

All weapons should be treated as if they were loaded at all times and should be handled as such and should not be aimed at anything or anybody unless the intention is to fire on that target.
A weapon has only one purpose, to fire a projectile with the aim of maiming or killing or the weapon it's self may maim or kill such as grenades, unlike a vice-grip which can be used for a number of jobs.
