Buying New Holland 8340 SLE

It’s rarely one bearing alone fails in a gearbox unless it was a high up bearing. If swarf from a worn bearing or worn brakes gets around the box before the filter it won’t do any good. Did you hear the noise when hot or cold? Can you find another identical tractor to compare sounds with?
It was when cold but remained through test drive as it warmed up to temp. Im afraid theres no others about they have got scarce mostly replaced with tms at this stage. Good news is she has a full new set of brakes i suppose.

After a few hours ploughing or drawing silage etc is when you’d want to listen for noises, oil would be very thin. Engine temp would be very unrelated to back end oil temp.

I suppose i will have to just take the chance on her to find out the truth about her then.

Reading between the lines here I would say noone knows what the hell it might be. On the positive side it's not likely to be a well known expensive issue if noone on here knows about it.

Honest owner, classic tractor, reasonable price.... chance it
don,t wait around too long or it,ll be snapped up

Maybe me being overcautious but that SLE gearbox was maxed out around 130hp and there are not many 8340's around producing less than that.

I'd get some advice from an independent NH mechanic if you can.

We brought a new 8340 in ‘96 and it gave plenty gearbox trouble. It was replaced with a TM125 five year later and that never gave any trouble worth talking about.

Yet the basics are in a T6.180 today.

In the end i took the chance and bought her. Have her home and overall happy with my purchase. I have one issue at minute. When tractor is cold it jumps from 4th to 8th gear after changing ranges and shows error code e14 and doesnt light up 5th to 8th gears on display beside gear stick. Once tractor has warmed it works perfecly with no issue. I have heard of this problem before has anyone come across this issue ?

I drove an 8340 that done that till it got warm. I was told they disconnected d light strip for d gears by d levers. My 7840 had d strip disconnected and i never had this issue
The light strip works when its warm funny enough. But not when its cold.

Error code E14 lists the following fault condition “1-4/5-8 Range lever switches on both”.

Finally got a chance today and have a bit of look about her today. Confirmed the switch for gear lever is at fault. Also need new switch for brake pedal for brake lights and 4wd engagement on braking. Anyone any recommendations where to get bits for her ?

Where is your location?

I wouldn’t know of any dealers or parts specialists from your area but there’s a few good ex dealer lads operating around here. It mightn’t be a case of just plug and play with some switches, some may need a laptop to calibrate them.

No laptop required its plug and play. Switch on gearstick is a straight forward on off ball switch really.
