Combines

I'd say even on my small acres, we've been longer cutting it since 2011 than the hours that it has put up

Are they not basically 1177/1188's with a bit fancier of tinwork?

I think they were replaced by Sampo versions.
The 1177 & 1188 were the final incarnation of JD combines that could trace their heritage back to the first JD combines designed in Europe in the mid 1960s , the 530, 630 & 730. (Prior to that they were essentially Lanz machines).
Being the "last of the line" they were pretty much well sorted out at that stage and were a good solid performer.
They were replaced by the 2000 range in the mid 1990s which introduced a whole host of electronic wizardry.
There was still a demand for a more basic machine so the 1177 specs were trimmed and sent off to Brazil (as @stevieg stated) and they came out with an 1170.
On paper and in pictures it looked more or less the same as the 1177 but in the field it did not match up. Poor build led to unreliability.

One was bought new near here in 1996. Its driver was an experienced combine operator and he and his boss spent two entire days of a ploughing match crawling over every inch of it looking, poking and considering before finally signing on the dotted line.
It finished him (the driver) and he left the job 2 years later rather than face another harvest with the 1170.

The 1470 is NOT an 1177 with a facelift rather an 1170 with as you say "a bit fancier of tinwork".

If l was buying a combine (and l'm not) that model wouldnt get a look in.

Of course, in the interest of balance l would love to hear from anyone who has something good to say about these as obviously all above is IMO.

One thing I wondered about the Brazilian combines: Why, on the 1170, did they go back to the 10 series design on the unloading auger with the driveshaft along the top only to do it 1177 style again on the 1450?

Don't know. Maybe they found a big heap of them in the back of some shed at Zweibrücken and containered them out to Brazil.
It all comes down to dollars ultimately.

how did he get on with it?
Not sure how long he kept it but it was a flyer for years never caused any major trouble till the end up. The hillmaster had its own hydraulic system or somthing and it used to overheat, last year then one of the augers in the bin split on it and took some big bearing with it too, took a couple of thousand to fix. That was the end of that machine on that farm, it was on TfMs website there over the winter

Combine leaked out clutch fluid the last day, not fully sure where, the cylinder under the cab seems damp, could have been leaking out of there for a long time and never noticed! Or could be somewhere else ? What or where does the problem usually occur on these manual combines ? Other than that it’s ran excellent all harvest

The master cylinder causes issues on the TX.

fluid seeps out under the cab onto the neck from the master cylinder. You’d notice it though. You can get a seal kit from the dealer
