Making up my own electric sliding gate, first rime to try anything like this so it'll be interesting!!! Have the complicated parts, so just to make up the gate and the rail etc. Anyone here familar with getting gates galvanised, or will I just paint it?
Anyway progress so far is I have the rail made up and getting the site ready, hoping to concrete the rail in next week, I only get a small bit of time each day so progress willl be slow!!

Would definitely go for galv, you could possibly leave the track painted as it ll be encased in concrete....the support frames need a bit of thinking but most co op or factory yards have sliding gates so should be easy to get ideas, if not let me know n can post pics of the one we do. Rollers gate and guide rollers can be from talitech.ie or adg.ie

Tis for the yard, keep the jippos out, and stock in. Had to laugh at the look of fear on the face of a tarmac "specialist" when our border cross chased him back into his van the other day!!!.....good dog!!!
Have the main rollers, will be looking for the guide rollers tho, are they normally nylon wheels?
I have all the other parts including a nice GMS controller that doubles up as a 4 zone dialler.

If your going to the expense and effort of an electric gate you might as well get it galved, or go for galvanised and painted if u didn't like the galvanised finish , the last one sliding gate I made last year was galvanised and painted the gate it self was 4.8m long weighing 485kg after galvanising and I went for the cantilevered system so didn't have a track in the floor at all ,very good system

Whats a 4 zone dialler?

I presume you mean some form of gateopener but interested in what the 4 zone bit is

Opens gate with designated numbers, and then has 4 zones that will ring your fone if triggered so you could add P.I.R.s, contact sensors, electricity cuts, etc, to the system.

So, how would one go about getting the gate galvanized? Ring Galco, organise transport and send it down? What prepping needs to be done to the steel other than the obvious holes in the steel?

they will collect it in most places for a small fee of course

from wexford to dublin is €88+vat collected + delivered back the next week

i was wondering that too, i have 2 zone diallers, as in , a gsm unit that will operate two different functions, one by a text and one by a phone call.
i could do with a 3 zone switch unit tho for a job i have on, but 3 zones is a bit trickier to find.

i have similar plans here sometime, but im hopin to make a cantilever gate
as said, i dont want a bar in the ground tbh as i would be tracking diggers in and out.
but they are a mighty job tho.
you got your motor and track sorted yet?

right.
round here the galv company collects for free, they all do tbh.

Are you going sheeting the gate or just straight bar`s .

How wide could you go with cantilever gate tlnman current gate into the yard at home is 18 ft but a bit tight for tractor`s and bale tralier`s and the truck .Road isn`t very wide here so wider is the only option job for the future though . What kind of money would the track and motor be.

better with bars or mesh imo, she would be like a sail on a windy day otherwise.

Seen a gate recently and the lad had vented sheeting on it look well now would`nt mind one with timber or plastic board`s on it look`s well and give`s a bit of privacy as the yard here is just inside the gate and everything can be seen from the road.

id say its kinda infinite in one way, as long as you can carry the weight.
my entrance here would be 25'wide, but i reckon ill need a gate about 40' long to be able to carry it.
there is a few different types of motor and speeds tbh.
i use DEA stuff here, been doing so for the last 15 yrs and with no trouble at all from it.
then there is the kit for the gate as well, rollers , track, and so on.

my yard is the same, once inside the gate your in the yard.
but i like lookin out too.
so you really need a happy medium id imagine.

That what i was wondering would like to go about 25ft if not even abit more but to have space then for such a large gate when open is another thing current gate is one piece and a bit of a nuisance when open and 2 gate`s is not an option .

im not so bad there, when i built the silage pits i left the outside wall so as it would line up with a cantilever gate, this way i have a precast wall to work off, altho, at some stage there will be a lean to extension to the shed and the gate will have to run inside it, not ideal, but not the end of the world either.
it depends on how heavy you make the gate too, that would dictate as to how much of an overhang you can work with.
i plan to make this one here out of 100x100x5 box, so it wont be light.:undecided:

Going straight bars, risk of flooding through the gate! Of course this means the motor and track have to mounted high. A few other factors means I have to work with the sliding rail type. I'm using 20mm bar welded to 5x2 H section encased in concrete and 2 5" wheels under the gate approx 5 meters long. Going to use 5x2.5" box for the gate and fill vertically with pipes, maybe 30mm. Posts Im making out of 100x100 box. Have to get concreting done ASAP before milk lorry starts collecting.

If you go with the track as opposed to cantilver how much longer than the gap does the gate need to be? lets say a 20 foot gap, how long is the gate?

pretty much double, you have to have a piece sticking out the back to catch the top roller when closed... must dig out those photos !

That's another bonus of a cantilevered system the gate only needs to 35% larger than the gap your filling un like the tracked system ,thus saving materials ,time ,consumables etc

hang on hang on what was I thinking...track needs to be double, gate about 1m extra...jet lag and befuddled brain

Try silverwood for the galvanizing the collect and return stuff for dipping around the midlands.

Over here collection/delivery is £35 with the company I use and galvanising varies between 47p/kg and 60p/kg depending on wat it is , they do charge for drilling any holes that have been missed in any hollow section but they do ring and ask where you would like them drilling rather than just drilling them anywhere.

do they actually drill them? Galco are fond of an arc welder turned up to the last, and they still charge you for the privilege
