AFAlK all those 500 series were capable of 50 k even back in 1995. They all came with solid rims. Some customers wanted variable rims for certain cropping requirements and these were supplied with 40k.
Exactly the same box just with top cog blocked off. Of course many if not most were unblocked by dealers after warranty.
