Hedgecutter upgrade

So thinking of changing the hedge cutter for something more modern. Currently have a McConnell hyreach which is converted to 3point linkage and servo controls. Was thinking a mcconnell 5455 ? On xtc controlls if I could find one? Or could i go bigger? 90hp tractor

Are you doing some contracting with it?

Depends on your land, if it's nice and level you will get away with something slightly bigger, but if your land is hilly you're better off sticking with something a bit more compact.

All flat level ground no hills thankfully.

I have a pa5455, decent reach but if you need something to reach across wide drains you will need a bigger cutter and tractor to carry it, the pa5455 has slightly more reach than the pa500 I had before it and is also a little lighter.

If you have drains you will need a reasonably long reach.

Thats my current machine, it had a section added in to outer arm at some point to extend it. Has all new f10 flails. 3pt linkage, servo controlls . Whats it worth?

Whats the models up from a 5455.

Would like XTC controls if possible.

Depends on the make/model of hedgecutter. A 6 meter contractor spec machine with a heavy duty head is a different beast to a 6 meter farmer spec trimmer.

If that has enough reach for you, then no need to go bigger. Clean machine to be fair.

If I could get more reach Id take it, if i had .5 or a meter more i could cut all my hedges from staying on the road if land was wet. Ye its a nice machine the servo controlls are super job. Iv the original cables for it too. Just had the notion of upgrading

Have you a budget, push up the reach and you will make it very hard on the linkage with severe compression of the RH drop link unless you get one of the kits McConnel do for mounting 4 point,, https://www.mcconnel.com/products/power-arms/55-series

Would you consider adding half a meter to each boom and hoses to give it the reach you want? Often contemplated doing that to mine.

That's a lovely hedgecutter.
Id keep it .
Spend your money on soil fertility , animal handling facilities/ housing . Gates , roadways , lighting .
Basically so.ething that makes your life easier or quicker to do .

Have taugh about it, but I think I want upgrade to something fresher. Think Iv enough small projects to be rooting at

What sort of money or work was involved with changing to servo controls?

The 5755 has a 5.7m reach and is a pretty tidy hedgecutter and wouldn’t be too big for your tractor.

I have a 5155 from the 55 series, and they are a very tidy straightforward machine. Would have went for a 5755 or 60 series, but got a good deal on the 5155 secondhand, and it will do most of what I need.

I don’t think your tractor would be able for anything bigger than a 55 series, or at least I think you would be putting too much pressure on it with a 60 series McConnel or bigger.

The pa5755 has a bigger 60 HP pump and oil cooler that the 5455 doesn't have, they are a good bit more expensive plus they only came out in 2022 so unless you are going new it is unlikely you will pick one up secondhand, dont think for your own use you would need the bigger pump, the 5455 is a nice bit bigger than the 5155 and the 5755 would be the same jump up from the 5455, it would probably be the limit for your tractor.

I wouldn’t agree with the ‘nice bit bigger’ description between a 5155 and 5455. A friend has the 5455 and the frame size, oil cooler and pump are the same. It is only 32kgs heavier, which is accounted for by the extra .3 of a metre reach. We had them side by side and you would not tell the difference unless close enough to read the model numbers and study the arm.

I looked at a new 5755 - which you are right are very expensive - but with the exception of the heavier pump and extra .6 of a metre reach on the arm, they have the same frame and the oil cooler is the same 180 litre tank as the 51,54 and 55.

All 4 models of the 55 series, the 51,54, 55 and 57 are objectively very similarly sized, with little more than a 100kgs difference across the range and .6 of a metre reach difference between the shortest (5155) and longest (5755) arm models. The new 67 series is a visibly much bigger and heavier machine, and too big for the OPs tractor, as would the 65 and 60 series, the predecessors to the 67 series.

For the OP a 5755 would fit his tractor and meet his requirement as per his original question. As for budget considerations, he didn’t mention figures and as such that is his own personal business to consider.

I got the idea when i seen @Win doing his on here for my set up I had to get a new servo controlled valve chest. I got a 3 section one but only needed 2 as only two functions on the joystick ( I have a kit i got from frank alviti to make 3rd spool electric didn't fit yet) Then I have 2 diverters like you would have on a front loader to do the slew on lift circuit and head tilt on arm in out circuit. In needs a pressure reducing valve and an 8 bar check valve too. On costs i don't remember off top of my head but it is very easy to use and very reactive and smooth,
from my research so far is the xtc controls the best to go for on second hand 10 or so year old machines

Thanks for the detailed reply That breaks down the models and specs perfectly. I had a brief look about online and I think to come up the years and future proof a purchase the 55 series would be the best option these were first produced in 2012 if my research is correct. I think my current Hy reach super E has a 54hp pump ? Going from original specs of the Hy reach super E it was 14ft 2 inches horizontal. As for budget It depends on what my one is worth to sell.

My 2022 pa5455 doesn't have an oil cooler so that must be something they have added since then, the pa5555 is a 60hp machine with only 10cm more reach than the pa5455 but weights nearly 70kg more, the pa5755 is 30kg more again so yes not a whole lot of difference in weight but the increase in reach puts a lot more pressure on the tractor. Either way they will all work on the OPs tractor and if budget isn't an issue I'd go for the pa5755.

Here's a nice secondhand 5755 if that's within budget:

I seen that 5755 it looks extremely fresh doesn’t have any price on ad.
