hedgecutting

There are in general two types of hedges, maintained hedges and escaped hedges, escaped hedges need side maintenance and control of the briars and scrup extending from the base, maintained hedges in my opinion should be trimmed annually, there is a suggestion that they should only be cut back every third year, that is just about ok if it's a whitethorn hedge but if it contains ash, elm, hazel and elder to name the obvious ones trying to get three year growth back to where it started gives the hedge a hell of a hammering no matter how sharp flails are.

Did one last week that took 22 passes before the landowner was satisfied

Oh by the lord, when was it cut last?
Really didn’t want to do it but they were very persuasive and are large customer.
Started out saying just push in the sides but as the job progressed the instructions changed.

It had been cut before but not in this century.

Got cheque on completion so all good but I wouldn’t like to have many like that

Some people think hedgecutters are reclamation tools.

It's a saw you'd need after ten years never mind over 25 years. The ground must have got some compacting.

I'm all for landowners/ occupiers maintaining as they say their boundaries. It's the " Roads act 1993 " that boils my piss. It's quoted further down in the article. I wonder what it says about " local authorities " and their obligations and responsibilities to road users ie pot holes, dangerous bends, roads in poor conditions, water not being directed of the road, etc.

I don't be donegal much, so don't know how well or not the local authority looks after it's " roads act 1993 " obligations/ responsibilities. But I know our own county local authority isn't fit for purpose in that regard.

They've some neck preaching.

Its houses bought by people from out of the area are the worst offenders around here imo. They won’t cut their hedges either for “their privacy” (it’s a big straggly sparse hedge that does nothing for them) or else “cause everyone drives to close to the entrance and we want them to keep out”
Worst part is they’ll cut the little square either side of their gate just enough that they can see up the road pulling out but leave the bit where tractor and truck mirrors are hanging out over the road

Council cuts the bottom 4 foot on roadside here, so as you say the mirrors suffer on anything but a car, then you get traffic waving you into the side, or into the hedge, then the opposite side of the road gets chewed up, maybe someone that has claimed it with the lawnmower....so they put big white stones on it to keep traffic off "their" bit...they love a big dirty tractor print on the grass....think it's illegal to place stones on the roadside? it is illegal to chew the shite out of the roadside verge but what do you do....

Then there is the tree/bush that grows in the garden, they trim the inside so the outside overgrows, but not low enough to annoy them, just any tractor cab or truck mirror......I accidentally wack a lot of them with the hedgecutter around midnight on the way home....
