I want to make a cnc plasma cutter gantry.
Will make a 600x1200 for now so 1/4sheet.
Electromagnetic feet to hold it
Light enough to store on a shelf or wall(no room for a full size table).
Got the cutter and a look on Google suggests rails motors etc should come in under £800

I’ll find you details, but nearly exactly what you’d looking for, on one single Z arm is already available.
 
@headcase have you seen this done?

It's an interesting idea if I understand you right. You're talking about a conventional plasma table but without the actual table?
 
I just don’t know how you’d link everything up?
It would be an interesting concept if you could design something like Ag Open gps where people could build their own systems easily enough.
With chat gpt and other AI tools coding wouldn’t be difficult.

Linear rails down 2 sides(yaxis)
Carriage carrying torch (xaxis)

Librecad is a open source download off github👍
It's the only cad program I've used and actually drawn a part in a hour!
Fusion360,autocad etc I haven't drawn a part
 
Will you still need a table though?

I don't like the magnets idea. Unless you use those switchable ones will you always be fighting swarf on the magnets messing with your torch height?

Yes 24v electromagnetic
24v psu to to the magnets and motors👍
