Opinions on semi automatic or fully automatic crush gate


Video of a Morris gate working. I would prefer the enclosed sides of the clipex or tepari but it's the same principal. I have seen the clipex gate on a crush with the a bar at the backside of the cow so that you're not standing at her head. I can't see how it would be any different to opening a semi auto head gate and then having to run the next animal up to catch their head. In an ideal world you'd stand at the back opening lever and let the first animal out and catch the next one without moving. I would love to see one on the flesh with cows going through it. I have seen the likes of Crawfords farm with his te pari crush and it seems a great job.

Can you get a grant on a crate like the te pari? I'd say they're saucy money.

We have an ODEL style semi auto gate and I'm not a fan. The spring at the top was too strong so I removed it. The cute cows would half walk into it and wouldn't push far enough so the gate wouldn't close and they would reverse out. With the spring gone it takes less pressure to close but the handle needs to be manually centered.

Have the same one here. Decent enough - we fairly have to put a bucket of meal at the head of the gate to get older cattle heads through. Sometimes needs a bit of a push on the piping to latch.

My main gripe though is the ability to wreck your hand if a lively beast exits. When you pull down the release handle, the latch gets too close to hand.
I really should get around to bending it out of the way.

I looked at ours today, it is pretty much the same, but it also depends how much you pull it down, ours is open enough to let cattle out forwards where I’ve pulled the handle down to in first pic, you only need to come down further than that to let cattle back into the crush, even the pic I took of it fully down is far further than you’d need to pull it to let them back. Just check the adjustment on that slotted link, it should have enough slack than thou only pull it about halfway to only let the cattle forward then when you pull the rest of the way down it opens both ways IMG_3964.webpIMG_3965.webpIMG_3966.webpIMG_3967.webp
 
I'll take a look. Yeah I know about pulling it down midway to only open it outwards; it's just in the heat of battle you pull beyond that as there is no catch at that point.

We get on fine with this gate, only issue is when animal puts all force backwards you can’t really open it till they go foward a bit.

Work with something similar, its rotten & have the new one sitting most of a year but not fitted yet.

As you say getting them open can be fun, they usually end up reversing out of it then open it, if they are stubborn enough they won't move, so I use a bar to take the pressure off it.

You can get a grant for a mobile crush that would probably cover it. The reference cost might not cover full cost as it is based on a standard type of mobile crush. Bought an o donnell setup earlier in the year for a few out blocks.

Had a handling crate on the end of a crush on an outfarm. It was some pain the get the cattle to go into it and the vet was cursing it the day of the testing as it was very difficult to reach the animal for injecting. Anyway it eventually rusted out and we put an automatic gate on the end of the crush. A big improvement.

Easily 5 years, we got ours before the grants came in. Lads in ennis are good to deal with. I was going to get an arrowquip but after seeing them at the ploughing I'm glad I didn't. A lot thinner steel, and the powder coating was chipping on a new one. Also more expensive

That's a neat setup. I've gone down the road of permanent setup at each place. Not sure if I am wise but it wouldn't be the first or last bad decision I make.
 
Doing up crush here bought the 3 hole poles but now can not find a 3 hole pole that will also let you bolt a new head gate to. Only 4 hole poles everywhere and I would prefer not to be butchering/welding head gate on to pole .Any idea where I would find what I am looking for
