the Journal of Findo must be due another "conacre makes €600ac in Wexford" front page headline very soon, its nearly 2 months ago since the last such type headline
The figures given are " main enterprise"Any figures for the areas the other 31500 are involved in?
your man from galway really went overboard alright, the bord bia auditor counting the mastitus tubes was a great oppurtunity for him:stop:I am not defending the journal but there isn't much opposition .The farming indo gave a full page this week to a lad, Walsh from Oranmore co. Galway blowing about having having 180 cows calved and 30% of the farm grazed at the first of March. You would think he was farming on another planet. And there's not to many pages in it altogether.
Between that and the weekly "Conacre market on fire". Agri Journalism how are you.
Regarding the "forgotten" sectors ,there are 130,000 farmers in total.Dairy accounts for 20,000.
Pigs that I am quite familiar with, number 300 and veg probably similar or less.
Beef and suckler men are by far the biggest sector.I don't know the figure for tillage.
I am dairy/suckler/beef on heavy poor ground, a far cry from Moorpark/sthKilkenny.
I love the little snippet at the back on the price of hay straw etc, whoever writes it has talked it down all year, around here in a considerable enough tillage area there is very little straw to be got and it's making good money, yet each week the journal copy and pastes the same article saying its in plentiful supply and can be bought for as little as €8 a bale :rolleyes2:
The fact that the article has been unchanged in 4 months from what I can see is a joke, lads have been ringing me looking for straw and when I tell them that I'm all out, they all reply that the journal said that there is plenty of it, makes it hard to get a fair price for it when people are all being led to believe that it can be bought much cheaper everywhere else :tdown:You'd only give yourself blood pressure reading that section to be honest.
Even down here in the back ass of nowhere and a good tillage area, it's making more than that now.

Never read it. What is it he sells?Andy Doyle's snake oil advertisement in this week journal really gets up my nose, I have no knowledge of these products so can't say for certain that they don't work but a 2 page write up by Andy with out any independent research being quoted makes me worried and then stating in the write up that they work best if they are not needed.
How can a good tillage expert like Andy in good conscience push this stuff with quoting independent trails?

Last week had the trace element applied to fertiliser article, I'm still not convinced tho.....Andy Doyle's snake oil advertisement in this week journal really gets up my nose, I have no knowledge of these products so can't say for certain that they don't work but a 2 page write up by Andy with out any independent research being quoted makes me worried and then stating in the write up that they work best if they are not needed.

I had an ad on donedeal around Christmas time, the amount of lads who ring up like that is a real pain in the hole, luckily a couple of sound lads also rang who were very easy to deal with. Its not the lads who ring up quoting the journal that I'd be concerned about, it's more the fella who you sell straw to every year and he then reads the journal afterwards which says that he is basically being rode, but if they weren't happy I suppose they wouldn't stay coming back. Big squares can also be amusing, we only bale 8x4x3 and they weigh 330-350kgs, you have the lads telling you such a fella is cheaper, but they are never sure what size or weight bales the other person is actually selling :rolleyes2:Hello have you straw for sale ,
I have €12 a bale .
The journal says it can be bought for €8 .
Go buy it from the journal so .
Is usually how a conversation goes with lads who want straw for nothing .
Have the same issue with the 8x4x4 lads don't realise they are around 500 kg and keep thinking they are 8x4x3 , say the price and they straight away say to dear and quote me the 8x4x3 prices . I don't even bother arguing any more because if they don't understand the difference there's no pointI had an ad on donedeal around Christmas time, the amount of lads who ring up like that is a real pain in the hole, luckily a couple of sound lads also rang who were very easy to deal with. Could be , straw has got very scarce , I don't think I could locate a load of round barley straw to easily now , even squares are getting scarce . When we run out we head towards Athy and when they run out its onto Wexford . Haulage is a big factor and very time consuming especially rounds , you wouldn't see the one and half hrs going loading and strapping a load properly .got a quote the other day from a fella , twenty euro per bale delivered , depends where your located
Rounds are a disaster during the winter, will be storing the minimum amount of them from now on, as you say the amount of time lost loading and tying is crazy, the squares are up in no time and can be tied down very easily too, it's more or less all gone around here now, it's literally car trailer loads to get lads through, looks like it will be a busy summerCould be , straw has got very scarce , I don't think I could locate a load of round barley straw to easily now , even squares are getting scarce .
