I know it’s been done a few times but for anyone that’s interested . Bit of a winter project going on in my spare time an evening here and there kind of thing it’s been going on a while plan is to have it finished for the summer. Was a very cheap curtainsider trailer came up for sale locally crossmembers were all rotten so I’m replacing them all with box and putting a 5mm floor. Could of got away with the crossmembers for a few years but said I’d just do a proper job when I’m at it. It’s 28ft long I built one 27 a few years ago and it was always very tight to get 6 on the floor so 28 should fit them comfortably.

Generally 27 ft for hay or straw, to keep them tight, and 28 for silage to allow more room. I went down the middle with 27.5 ft 😅 5mm floor is pretty heavy, looks like a good solid job 👍

Crossmembers are dead handy to cut out there only welded in 2 spots have an rtec plasma used it to cut the welds and slide them out. Dirty job cutting them out and cleaning it down.

Yeah just made up a frame out of rsj and welded them solid. It has a sprung drawbar probably should have put a proper spring kit on it but I’ve done it this way before and works fine behind a 40k tractor.

Lovely job. I find on trailers here the leaf spring on the drawbar gives a smoother ride than the coil springs.

herron silage trailer we have here is done similar. issue is it seems to snake a bit on the road

That’s gona be a lovely job when finished! Have you channel turned out for the sides the same as the rear?

Only reason I ask is I’ve thought several times that I’d do it that way if I was doing it, then I’d get 2 lengths of 16mm bar and make a series of small plates, weld them into the channel and weld the bar to it so that it sits central in the channel, that way you can hook ratchet straps onto the 16mm bar at pretty much any point along the trailer but also in my head I’m thinking that you could hang the strap from the bar and it would hopefully stay in place till you walk around to pull it tight

Yeah the channel is turned out. I’m not sure what way to do the tie down points I don’t like the rope hooks under the channel. When your tying down a load of bales on your own the hook keeps slipping off before you get round to tighten the far side,

Excuse the crude drawing but this is what I mean, the 16mmbar(green) would be running along the length of the trailer so the hooks (red) could sit over the bar till you pull on the strap from far side. Maybe it wouldn’t work out… I agree though hooks underneath don’t really work

I turned the channel out like that, but I welded a series of U irons to the back of it that the hooks sit into. That way they never come off, but your idea is more flexible as it allows you to put straps on almost anywhere.

Saw a truck qith round bars like that.
The driver was up on the load of bales, and could hook onto the round bar from the top! Just dangled it down, and pluck it at the right moment!
