Tyre Size

Hi Lads,

I know this question has been asked before, but we have a TM135 on the following tyre sizes:

Rear 460/85/R38 (18.4 R38)
Front 380/85/R28 (14.9 R28)

They need to be replaced. Can I put a larger Tyre on say 20.8's on the back and if so what is the equivalent front tyre size?
Thanks

600 and 480 I think possibly but could be wrong, I think a 600 is close enough to a 20.8 anyway, and 480 is the match on the front of the nh here, they are 65 sidewall but I'd imagine it'd be the same in 85 profile?

Check the rim size as you will more than likely need wider rims for the fatter tyres

@gone is the tyre expert, but according to what I have on the Deutz 520/85R38 = 20.8R38 and 420/85R28 = 16.9R28

20.8/38's and 16.9/28's Should be fine.
If the rims are wide enough.
Will look up min width the rims need to be.

If you want to go wider and don't need the extra height I would go for 520/70/38's and 420/70/28's.
If you want the extra height then the front rims will probably be your biggest issue, to fit 20.8's and 16.9's need to have DW16x38 rear rims and DW14x28 front rims.

Cheers Lads

As you know with the cab suspension on the TM's the back wheels can look small and not fill the arch fully.

Would a set of 580/70/30's and the equivalent size for the front fit those rims? Nice size tyre them rear 580's. Look well on a tractor.

Very unlikely, but have to agree they are a great all-around tyre.

Hey folks, quick question, 160hp 6.5 tonne tractor that will mostly spread slurry, small amount of ploughing (16" furrow) pull trailed silage harvester (trailer pulled behind) pull roller/press on ploughed ground, spread fertilizer in front of drill, act as backup to tractor on drill. This tractor won't do big hours possibly 200 hrs, currently only pulls harvester is an under-utilised older tractor that we need to get more from rather than spend money on a newer machine. It has 18"x38 and 14"x28rims. My options are as far as I understand are 580/70r38 or a 600/65r38 I have heard bad things about the 600's being poor on grassland work any experience?

They are very different sizes, the 600's are the same height as 18.4's and the 580's are the same height as 20.8's.
I would rate the 580/70/38's way ahead of the 600/65/38's.
A 160 really should be on the 580's.

different rims needed but i would go 580/70 on back 600/65 are common fitment but they arent the best as 18.4 is too narrow to get tire to fit properly.

to put 580/70 you would need to change front rims to 16.9r28

Thanks @gone is it the longer footprint you feel gives it better grip? Speed/Load/pressure tables are not a million miles apart. Doing smallish hours I don't think I can justify much more than theBKT, does anybody have experience of working these at lower pressures doing top work? Are the sidewalks up to it their obviously no michelins but hours and mounted gear are not over large, heaviest item by a long shot would be the one pass and that will be very occasional.

BKT don't do low pressures.
The 580's have a larger footprint.

Thanks for the advice, most of the time you get what you pay for, I have same size rims on main tractor so may talk myself into buying something better that can be passed on if this tractor is traded, in the 580/70 38 who would you folks rate without going the whole €6000ish Michelin route?

If you are going to be doing small hours and not on the road much, I would consider firestone, very poor ware but if you are doing small hours that will not be an issue.
