Winter oats 2023

Last of the oats went over the weigh bridge today. Moisture ranged between high 19's and 21.5 been the highest. Busheled 53 to 56. Tonnes per acre?, a dismal 2.5 on avg. Very disappointed but not surprised given the absolute mess it was in with a lot of it not just sprouting but green as grass it was so far along. This time next year Rodders......

Same as me, wouldn’t mind I thought they looked fairly good all year. What variety had you ? I’m not taking any husky this year every-time I grow it winter or spring I’m dissapointed

Don’t blame yourself it’s the weather. I have often read on here about your excellent yields with oats. I’m only new to oats and hoped to get somewhere near you and was very happy to achieve 3.92.
You will be back close to 5 ton next year.

Same as that. Up to a few weeks ago I was hopeful of a solid 3.5 ton plus crop. Thankfully it's on my own land and not leased ground. The variety was Isabel.

Thanks, I'm annoyed with myself for missing a shortener. At the time the oats was very short and I thought the drought had done the job. Boy was I wrong. Feckin stuff ended up 5ft high. Lesson learned there regardless of weather next time.
3.92 is very good and especially so when it's your 1st time growing them. Next year it'll be yourself we'll all be aspiring to match.

Just finished the oats tonight before the rain. 2 fields did about 3.2 and one did 3.9 at about 18% and 54kph.
Just the straw to bale if we ever get a settled spell of weather

If someone had winter oat ground that looked like a cut of silage now would or could you turn cattle onto it to graze it down?.

I have often grazed it with sheep, and on a normal year I would have no hesitation in grazing with light cattle, but soil is very fragile at the moment, if sowing winter wheat I wouldn't. Or more correctly, I was going to graze some this week, but the fields are too wet to allow heavy cattle near them, so I will spray off and hopefully get wheat sown in 3 weeks.
