Had a man hauling our stock like that, he got away without being pain a couple of times, always aye must get a look at that answer. I kept paying him as we went, like it was in the beginning and after a year of asking gave him what I thought, gets paid every time now and I wouldn’t let him out of the yard without unless I’m positive he will be back within a week.

On the topic of banks, we're with AIB and I forgot my chequebook one day(my mistake). I wasn't able to pay for stock with my debit card, the limit is apparently €7000 per day which didn't cover my invoice. Anyone using a bank where debit cards can be used up to higher values? Would be interested to hear honest opinions.

Revolut is great for day to day bits and going for meals and pints with mates. Instant transfers and split bills is super handy, especially if there's a stingy fucker in the group😂 Also no fees for different currencies when abroad.

As Tafkat said above, 20k with boi, but had to arrange that in the branch. 7k wouldn’t go far in the mart alright.
1k is max cash I can do with the card. Had to ask for that too. I was in Austria a couple of years ago and the atm there was giving out 100 euro notes, you would never see one around here.
It’s no wonder the banks returned to profitability so quickly after the bust with everyone using cards instead of cash these days. They must be getting 1.5% of every small transaction. What would they be getting on a large transaction?

An uncle of mine got hedges mulched back and a good bit of work done one, man and machine there nearly 3 weeks, he put in years chasing the bill and no luck, wen he was sick and on the way out the digger man was heard spouting that his work was on dieing in debt one Sunday in the pub my brother was in! It was sorted quickly after that report came back when the cheque was wrote for him
 
i have two lads that haven’t done work for me in 5 yrs (one has changed his line of work and the other just wasn’t covering my area any more/I have never even met him) and I must owe both circa 20k between them. No invoices, I have asked for IBAN to make some sort of payment. No, nothing coming. What more can I do?

The funny thing was, a new guy I deal with asked one of them for a reference for me, and he said I was sound out to deal with 🤣.
 
I think it’s mechanics and other trades that are the hardest to pay, I don’t know many contractors that aren’t looking for money

I think some people just hate paperwork and dont even write down what they've done. Have a lad does fencing work here, I just send money electronically and eventually he'll tally things up

Reading through some of the posts in this thread I was wondering the same myself. If it's the former then I must be doing something badly wrong here, because it certainly isn't the latter.

I was in a much busier establishment the night after the All-Ireland hurling final and the small number of people who like myself were trying to pay with cash were causing absolute mayhem behind the counter, the staff just couldn't handle it, I don't think I got the right change back for any round I bought.

I went into Barr An Chaladh in Woodquay Galway with a few friends last weekend. Place was very busy. Went up to the counter and ordered and when the barman came back with the drinks my friend took out his phone to pay. Cash only in here says the barman. We all looked at each other blankly and had to leave the drinks behind to go get cash. Was very surprised

I always carry a fifty euro note behind my phone cover for times like that. Would be a bad day if you had to die of the thirst.

Again though, he must either be making serious money out of what he is at, or have another income coming in.
And if he is not even writing down work done, there are losses there too.
Not many business's can sustain not getting paid in a timely manner, or not even charging for all work done.
Even a person on a healthy wage wouldnt be long noticing a drop in said wage.

I joke about it regularly to people, about how a deal could come up and if you didn’t have the cash on you, you couldn’t secure it.

But if you got a puncture on the road, and most of these new cars have no spare wheel, I think you should have cash on you to pay for roadside call out to fit new tyre, at minimum.

I sort of understand businesses not taking cash/card.
The no cash is valid if say it’s a small coffee doc in a horse box somewhere. 2 vulnerable staff there that could get mugged. Card machine doesn’t provide same issue.
I still think everyone should take cash though, but with a sign that card is preferred.

Most barbers I know have a sign “cash preferred” and offer a discount if paying in cash.

I used to carry cash when I smoked, not now tho, other than a couple of quid in loose change which gets annoying in the hip pocket if sitting, or on the floor under something.
We also have new plastic notes this past few years & you have no chance of keeping them in a pocket.....never a fan of a wallet either.
