Soil Sampling

I like to use the same testing service from year to year for consistency and I get used to reading the results and comparing them across the years (Teagasc in my case)

Started doing leaf tissue tests this year to see if I can keep a closer eye on trace elements. (Lancrop UK)
 
I use Lancrop for everything and they are normally fast and efficient, I send them off through the co-op but between them they have made a right mess out of the last batch! They do an interesting animal health test which tests for trace elements important to animal health. Worth considering if you feel thrive or fertility not what it should be, also helps to tailor minerals to your farm. In our case very low iodine and high molybdenum.
 
Use fba here too, don't know how Teagasc can justify the extra money for the samples!

How much cheaper are fba? I usually get the full pk, lime and TE’s from Teagasc. Price is €36 but usually do it for €31.
I’ve used fba in the past but never bothered comparing prices as I didn’t think it would come to much.

We are not comparing like for like then, Cork :blushing:

Simple sample of Ph, p and k is 14 euro with FBA and was twenty five euro with Teagasc the last time I looked.
 
Teagasc are 20 if you take the sample yourself, or 25 if they send out someone to take them. Talk of a price increase again though which will really push them out of line
 
Posted leaf samples to Lancrop on Monday. Results received by email on Friday
 
Got soil samples back today from a test i did of some silage ground. Came back index 1 for p and k, ph is 6, this ground received 35 units of nitrogen to the acre a month ago, what would ye go with now to close up for silage?
 
Why would you use 0s for silage ?
Plenty of options there
10-8-25+S, 11-7-23+S, 10-5-25+S
Your getting out more S and a better form of P
You concentrate on that yalla barley of yours and leave us grass gods do our own thing......
How many merchants in primarily grass areas stock any of those compounds realistically?

No big deal order what’s needed from any merchant and it’s collected from any of fert companies same as any product

Get ground limestone out would be my advice

3.5 bags of 0-7-30 ASAP and another 60 units of Sul can. That must be quite shook looking?
Its silage ground we have taken, been cut 3 times ever year with the last few years. Was cat looking a month ago, greened up a small bit since the urea went out. Anyone of spread muriate of potash?
 
DAP based P will be way more available than TSP based P as @Hardysplicer says at these indices a DAP based compound is the only way to go at time of year.

For the uneducated among us (me) What compounds include DAP? What is in straight 16%P? I have some low index fields I am trying to improve and have been using straight 16%P on top of my normal grassland fert.

10.10.20 usually has some DAP in it afaik?

How much of the grassland in this country must be a very poor state fertility wise?
When the land is lacking the nutrients, it really must have an impact on not only forage yield but also on forage quality and the consequent milk and meat?

I wonder is the next step from just measuring DM yield to measuring the calorific yield from crops (grass, maize, cereals etc etc).
I know we have the UFL system for comparing feed values but is there more to do?

We’d better get the basics right first I guess!

your well behind, testing for calories here on 15 years, but would be similar enough to UFL. unless a crop has access to adequate minerals, it wont have it in the feed
