Keep in the Farming/contracting trades?

Some of us must question what we do from time to time, especially if at times like this with the weather as it is.
Is it because you genuinely love the job?
Because you dare not take a step into another profession?
Or you were born into it, went and tried other things, and then returned?

Some people work to live others live to work.Im the latter and thoroughly enjoy it :001_smile:

I'm like you 4x4 in a way I grain farm / sell liquid fertilizer = short line equipment = clean seed as well as sell seed beans / corn / wheat etc etc.

However I'm just at home out traveling around the country enjoying seeing how other folks live and I'm still looking at other countries to visit.

Life is tooooo short to not do what one enjoys doing.

Pick a job you love and you will have to go to work a day in your life

i do my job out of satisfaction i get from sowing the seed through to harvest and seeing nature along with. yes like weather is at the moment its hard work but then i think of summer in our air con machinery, also the responsibility of operating equipment that costs thousands i think is a priviledge.

ummmmm don't know realy it's an intrest each day is diffrent same with the seasons ..

guess it's just being self employed in someways work my own hours ..

8 years ago we hit crossroads with selling our last place we could have tossed a coin and done other things or invested the money in to other intrests ..

yea there are times you ask "what if some one come along with a wad of cash" at this stage the answer has been to keep on going it's not the coin as return on money is low , i have had others in other industrys mainly rural based or in smaller towns be it foresty contracting , DDing,shearing ,pub work,food industry

strange to say i was offered a job with a butcher at 15 , one boss told me to be come a cop, others offered me jobs as mangers ,one fella offered me a job selling parts for landcrusers ,had 2 jobs lined up with small motors chainsaws one of them was doing PD's for WA in OZ and to top it off a boss i respecded a lot said i should apply for a job as a funrul director ..
all of them hands on solveing probs dealing with the public

realy boils down to the chanlange 8 years here we have lifted stock output's while lowering inputs regrassed large areas some worked well others have been a write off at this stage there is still goals to reach and dreams to follow once thats done ummmmm who knows maybe it becomes a job

Ive pretty much decided that this is the first year since I was 12 that I wont be sat on a tractor all summer. Done 8 years and its time for a break, there is more to life than farming, something managers sometimes forget. Very few intelligent people my age want to be doing 90+ hours a week for 6 weeks in a row.

In 20 years time I would love to own my own place, but have realised the only way to do that is do something other than farming to earn enough money to get back in. Makes me laugh those people talking on ITV about what qualifications to get - my advice would be get an education completely not related to farming - its easier to get back in than get out!! If daddy owns a farm or business then fair enough, for everyone else how on earth can we work our way up to landowner? We cant, there is so much gap between those who own the land and those who run it.

Dont get me wrong - the job can be fantastic, but the money isnt there for me. With £10k student loan debt you need some decent return.

When I was actively farming I made it a point to go down the pub at least one night a week to see mates who weren't connected with the job at all. I used to like to hear their perspective on life, hear about their problems, blah di blah.

And they all took home more money than I did. But JC, they had some crap jobs. One such friend was a dentist. Intelligent bloke, degree, all the rest. But when he described how many people he had to see on the NHS to make a decent living I thought it was an absolute bummer.

And how would you like to spend most of your day looking into peoples mouths, a lot of whom didn't practice any standard of oral hygiene.

Another friend was a bookie. Having to deal with dross walking into the shops everyday, some half cut, some on drugs. Managers who put their fingers in the till.

And a financial adviser who had to jump through far more hoops than farmers ever do in terms of accreditation, compliance, etc.

It's funny. They all envied me. (except if it had poured down on acres of hay just before baling, if harvest was three weeks late, if sheep were dying left right and centre during lambing)

As one of my legal advisers once said to me "David, you've spent you entire life doing exactly what you wanted to do" Not quite true but near enough.

Why do I keep in farming:

Variation of different jobs at different times of year,

No commuting to work,

Will never go hungry,

Great job to see the kids grow up,

and next year we are going to start to make a fortune!!

We had a couple staying in our holiday house this summer . The man said to me . “ my wife said we should move up here and buy a sheep farm “ he then proseded to tell me “because it is easy isn’t it . You just put the sheep in the field and leave them “ .

I said yeah that’s about it easy eh

most of my mates know nothing of agriculture and are always interested in what I am up to. They all seem to think I have a good job, but the seasonality of the job is still something they can't get used to.
