The 6506 was the naturally aspirated version of the 6600. At the time you could buy one and add an aftermarket turbo and it was still cheaper than the 6600. The 6510 had a turbo right from the off.

was there not more to it than that?

I thought the 6506 has some parts from the 6800/6900.

like the 6600 engine mated to the 6800 rear, or the 6800 engine mated to the 6600 rear.

or something. I thought it was more than just a 6600 witout a turbo.

I think it was a straight 6 cylinder engine mated to a 6400 backend.

6600 had a 5.9L 6 cylinder turbo engine and a back end near identical to a 6400

6506 had a 6.8L no turbo and 6400 back end

6800 and 6900 had a 6.8L turbo and the back end was heavier than the 6600 etc.

so big engine with no turbo and small back end.

add on turbo and you would have a bit of a beast alright with the extra litre over the 6600

The 6520 started without a turbo then was turbocharged when the common rail came out, father in law had an early one with a retrofit turbo.
