I had occasion to visit a public house lately that I had never set foot in before. I ordered a pint, the girl behind the counter in probably her mid-20's and obviously a regular fixture asked me was I paying by cash or card. I said cash and asked how much, she said she didn't know, she thought €6.20 but she would find out. Came back and said €5.60, fine, handed her a tenner and she took out a calculator to work out the change due. Next pint same again, cash or card, I gave her 3 €2 coins and the calculator came out again. I noticed over the course of my stay that I was the only one paying by cash, I was the youngest customer in the place by a good bit and everyone else was paying by either card or phone. The two things that struck me were the complete lack of interest the girl had in her job if she didn't even know the price of a pint of Guinness, and the inability to carry out simple sums in her head, which highlights the aforementioned lack of financial literacy.
I was in a much busier establishment the night after the All-Ireland hurling final and the small number of people who like myself were trying to pay with cash were causing absolute mayhem behind the counter, the staff just couldn't handle it, I don't think I got the right change back for any round I bought.
