Maize 2021 varieties

Was just about to say it. Dad was up paying the lads for the seed, plastic and spray yesterday and they said it to him. We have to use non or biodegradable stuff from now on. We used a small bit of the latter this year and it's waist high at the moment here. Be interesting to see it come harvest now.
Ah was it not allways bio degradable…. No I think it’s completely different plastic made from plant starch that’s only allowed and I don’t think there is any of it commercially used yet but I could be wrong, somthing to do with the price of it.

Ya it's ment to be has gotten better over the last few years but was never fully gone. This stuff is to break down quicker starts after 6weeks I think. But at the moment there is only certain variety you can use under it. Ya something in the region of 50-70euros a ac more I heard

Still some stuff here hanging around from 10years ago. Often if you examine a soil clod, at the heart of it, will be a small bit of plastic

Don't know what height it was on the 4th of July as I didn't get a chance to look at it. Starting to move along now though. Should really take off with the temperatures forecast

There will be very little difference between that and the plastic stuff when all is said and done, the next week is key for maize and with a super forecast it will be bloom.

Took a wander into one of the maize fields a few mins ago. It's at full height now. Cobs formed and starting their journey to filling out. Two varieties p8200 and p8201. The p8200 would be ahead on cob formation at the moment.

Looks like allot of double cobs? We quickly forget about the cold early season with a week of fine weather

Ya seems to be but that 2nd cob won't be hardly half full I'd say. Id sooner one decent cab than two yokes of cobs. I know that hot spell really drove it on. That maize is close to 8ft tall I'd say.

I often reckoned that some varieties were allot more prone to double cobbing. Its annoying

We have had Justina, benicia and these two varieties and they all seem to try give two cobs. I must check the variety that's under the biodegradable plastic and see if that is doing the same

Yes some varieties are very prone to it. The best solution is to reduce N rates and number of plants per acre. Too many plants is pretty much a sure fire way to contribute to multiple cobs, as is overloading the N. Research in our local centre reckon that maize needs no more than 40u/ac.

As an aside I planted an ‘Irish’ type variety at the end of June after sorghum that failed due to soil capping. The FAO index was 160 and we planted it at 111 and 69k plants per hectare. Results should be interesting.

What is the normal lowest FAO you would plant in your area?

Just 40u/ac?

Just 40u/ac?
Yep. That would be with organic manures included. Maize needs P to be easily available at early stages, hence starter at sowing, and P & K readily available throughout the later growth stages.
Starter, usually DAP, is a waste of money on grain maize as it doesn’t do anything for grain yield, it just drives biomass.

Maize ´Severus’ FAO 160/170, planted end of June. Two stalks on the left were planted at 69k/ha and the two on the right were planted at 111k/ha. Second pic is the same two cobs. No artificial fert and no organic manure with two years. Soil index 4.

Two cobs on the left are Pxxx(?) FAO400 planted end April. The others as above.
Two on the left got 60t/ha of fym and 50kg/ha DAP. All are dryland (non irrigated).
All had a CC of pure clover before planting.

Walked into a field of maize of ours. At the moment standing almost 10ft. Seen 3 cobs on some plants. Cobs seem to be well filled out on both cobs. The p8200 which has the more orange look is more advance ripe wise then the p8201 but the p8201 is slightly higher. Def a month away yet
